So, what does Montessori actually look like?
If you have never experienced a Montessori environment, it will likely look and feel very different from a traditional classroom.
You will see students working independently, collaborating in small groups or receiving targeted teacher guidance. Multiple activities unfold at the same time, with students deeply engaged in work suited to their stage of learning.
Teachers, known in Montessori as Guides, carefully observe each student, introduce new concepts, and support their individual growth. Rather than standing at the front of the classroom delivering the same lesson to everyone, Guides empower increasingly active participants in their own education.
The environment itself is also an crucial part of learning. Spaces are thoughtfully prepared to encourage independence, concentration, exploration and collaboration, with purposeful materials and resources
So, what does Montessori actually look like?
Every child develops differently. Montessori allows students to progress at an appropriate pace, with Guides providing individual and small-group lessons, support and challenge based on each student’s needs and readiness.
Learning is active and purposeful. From hands-on Montessori materials in the early years to real-world projects, research and practical experiences in adolescence, students are encouraged to explore ideas deeply and make meaningful connections.
Students are given opportunities to make choices, manage their time, care for their environment and take responsibility for their learning. As they grow, so too does their level of independence.
Montessori does not mean children simply do whatever they want. Students have meaningful choice within a structured environment, with clear expectations, routines and guidance that help them develop self-discipline and responsibility.
Montessori students learn in multi-age groupings, allowing them to build strong relationships over time. Younger students learn by observing and working alongside older peers, while older students develop confidence, leadership and empathy.
Rather than focusing only on memorising information, Montessori encourages students to ask questions, investigate ideas and understand the why behind their learning. This helps nurture curiosity and a genuine love of learning.
Education is about developing the whole person. Alongside academic learning, Montessori supports social and emotional development, practical life skills, creativity, collaboration, resilience and a sense of responsibility toward others and the world around us.
Who was Dr Maria Montessori?
Dr Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator and anthropologist whose pioneering work transformed our understanding of how children learn and develop. Through decades of scientific observation, she recognised that children have an extraordinary natural capacity to learn when they are given the right environment, meaningful experiences and appropriate levels of independence.
Today, her research-backed approach is practiced worldwide, evolving alongside modern developmental science while staying true to its core mission.
