At MIC, the prepared environment extends beyond the classroom into 22 hectares of beautiful natural bushland.

Here, nature is not simply a place for play, it is an essential part of the learning experience. Every day, children explore, observe and discover through authentic experiences that nurture curiosity, independence and a deep respect for the natural world.

Whether tending the gardens, watching insects at work, climbing through natural play spaces or quietly observing seasonal change, children develop a meaningful connection with the environment and an appreciation for the world around them.

Young children are natural explorers.

Our outdoor learning environment encourages children to ask questions, solve problems and make discoveries through purposeful experiences. As they climb, build, investigate and create, they develop concentration, resilience, creativity and confidence alongside their physical skills.

Time spent outdoors also supports social and emotional wellbeing, providing opportunities for movement, quiet reflection and joyful exploration every day.

Every element of our outdoor environment has been intentionally designed to support children’s development.

Children have opportunities to:

  • Explore gardens and natural landscapes
  • Climb, balance and build coordination
  • Observe insects, wildlife and seasonal change
  • Investigate natural materials through sensory exploration
  • Collaborate through imaginative and open-ended play
  • Care for plants and their environment
  • Enjoy quiet spaces for reading and reflection

These experiences encourage independence, nurture curiosity and foster respect for themselves, others and the natural world.

Respect for the environment begins in the Children’s House.

Children actively care for gardens, observe seasonal changes, compost, nurture living things and learn that they have an important role in caring for the world around them.

These daily opportunities help foster environmental stewardship while strengthening children’s connection to place, community and nature.
