Following the launch of our new Primary Playground, we are pleased to share more about how MIC designs play and learning spaces, and why this process matters.
At MIC, play spaces are never just about equipment. They are designed as prepared environments, shaped by Montessori principles and informed by child development, with the aim of bringing out the very best in our students.
Our approach brings together several key elements. We begin with Montessori design principles, which remind us that environments quietly guide behaviour, learning, and relationships. We pair this with developmental psychology, ensuring spaces respond to how children think, move, collaborate, and grow at each stage of childhood. Just as importantly, we listen carefully to student voice, inviting children to share what excites them, challenges them, and helps them feel confident and connected.
Safety, durability, and respect for the natural environment are woven through every stage of the process, so spaces are both inspiring and secure.
To share this thinking more fully, we have created a short brochure that outlines how Montessori design and developmental psychology work together at MIC to shape our play spaces. It reflects not just this playground, but our broader approach to designing environments that support students’ minds, bodies, and social development as they grow.
We invite you to explore the brochure and learn more about how these ideas come to life across the College. Read the full brochure below.
