Last month we shared our refreshed Strategic Approach which included four core values that sit at the heart of our College; generosity, courage, respect and integrity.

Our value of generosity is captured in this statement:

I wanted to expand a little on how generosity is woven through the College, and how it extends beyond mere acts of giving to encompass a broader ethos of empathy, community, and interconnectedness.

In a Montessori classroom, children are encouraged to understand and appreciate the value of generosity from a young age. This begins with the prepared environment, which fosters cooperation rather than competition. Children learn to share resources, take turns, and help one another in their learning journeys. By participating in group activities and collaborative projects, they experience firsthand the benefits of working together and supporting their peers.

Parents play a crucial role in reinforcing the principle of generosity. Their involvement and commitment of time and resources enhance the educational experience for all students. By volunteering in the classroom, participating in school events, and supporting community initiatives, parents model generosity and community spirit for their children. This active participation helps create a strong, supportive network that benefits the entire school community.

Generosity in Montessori education also involves cultivating a sense of responsibility and stewardship. At MIC children are taught to care for their environment both inside the classroom and out in the natural world around them. Practical life activities, such as tending to a garden or caring for our chooks, instill a sense of duty and empathy towards living things. These experiences help children develop an intrinsic motivation to contribute positively to their surroundings.

Generosity extends beyond the campus bounds and into the community. Montessori students often engage in community service projects, helping them to understand the impact of their actions on others and the importance of giving back. Whether it’s participating in local clean-up efforts, volunteering at a community kitchen or organising fundraisers, these activities reinforce the idea that generosity is a vital part of being an active, responsible member of society.

The emphasis on generosity fits beautifully with the Montessori ethos of fostering independent, compassionate, and socially conscious individuals. When children practice generosity, they learn the value of kindness and the importance of contributing to the well-being of others. This foundation not only enhances their personal growth but also prepares them to be empathetic and responsible members of society.

Teaching young people the principle of generosity is crucial in today’s hyper-fast, interconnected world where consumerism and the desire to fit in can often pull a young person’s focus inward. Embracing generosity can equip them with the emotional intelligence to navigate diverse social landscapes and the moral compass to make ethical decisions. By instilling these values early, Montessori education helps shape a generation of individuals who care about others and who are interested in making a positive impact on the world around them.

Reflecting on how we model the value of generosity at MIC allowed me to consider generosity in my own life and the immensely positive impact of having a generous mindset.

I encourage you to use this as a conversation starter in your own family, I’ve found kids often surprise us with remarkable examples that we could learn from.
